Customers praised this multi-functional hatchet for its sharp blade, solid build quality, and excellent value. "Sharp right out of the box" with "decent weight" and "great balance." The Kydex sheath and full-tang construction received high marks. Some noted it's better for chopping than splitting large logs, and a few wanted a thicker handle or more weight.

This is a solid hatchet that I was pretty excited to put in our camping bin to use both at the fire and for hammering in tent stakes. It came packaged immaculately with belt sheath and even a lens cleaning cloth (for some reason?).

Anyways, when I used this to split some typical campfire logs I finally noticed that at the rear of the hatchet blade where the hammer face is bolted - it has an edge perpendicular to the blade surface. So the blade doesn't gradually flare out at the point and it takes a great deal of effort to get the blade any deeper into the wood because of the back of the hammer part getting stuck on the surface of the wood.

While looking for a hatchet to take river camping, I came across this one that seemed to check all the boxes I was looking for: Waterproof handle, sheath with clip, hammer, and the ability to hold behind the cutting edge.

Being a tool snob though, I set my expectations low and waited for it to arrive.

It showed up in a simple box, but very nicely packaged. The Kydex sheath that it comes with the hatchet fits it PERFECTLY. The sheath also incorporates a couple of grommets and slots for securing it however you might want to. On the back of the sheath is about the coolest belt clip I've ever seen. It's hinged, locking, and adjustable. I have faith that wherever it gets put, it's going to stay.

Removing the sheath I found a cutting edge that's been ground one step below a full mirror polish-something I certainly did not expect. That was not nearly as surprising as how sharp this thing was out of the box--it easily slices paper like a kitchen knife.

I really like the milled face on the hammer side, it's similar to my framing hammer and keeps the hammer from slipping off what it's hitting. The handle has a nice feel, it's easy to hold in 3 different positions and the material has a good texture and nice machining.

The only thing I found I don't like about this is directly related to my use. With the nail puller/pry bar at the end of the handle having a sharp end, I'm terrified of dropping it and putting it through a raft. So I'll be cutting that off and grinding it smooth so I don't have to worry.

Overall I'm really happy with this hatchet and pleasantly surprised by the quality.

This is a premiere carry-along / belt tool. Hatchet, hammer, and nail puller are a nice combination. It has a good weight and feel too. I like the orange-colored handle (as opposed to other options) to make it easy to fine in the yard or the woods. I would recommend wearing gloves, as the handle is strong but not soft on the hands. It has a quick-release (of sorts) to pull it from the belt case. However, getting it back in quickly will take some practice. A nice tool.

This axe is comfortable in the hand and with gloves on. Unlike a chopping axe, where most of the weight is in the axe head, this has its weight distributed throughout the entire length. This makes it a good choice for a utility axe, but not a good choice for chopping large wood. This is great for light camping use, fence work, breaking down pallets and similar light duty tasks.

The prybar/axe/hammer combo make it a good choice for those wanting to reclaim pallet wood. This axe will split the pallet wood no problem, you don't need a heavy axe for that.

The holster is fitted well and keeps the axe in place. It's a good sheath to protect the blade and yourself. It's made to be worn with a belt, I never do that so, I won't comment on how that fits. It's great to throw in the truck toolbox and not worry about.

So far, I'd recommend this axe. When it cools down and I get more use out of it, I'll see if it keeps it's edge.

Very nice hatchet. It has a really good heft, and size is perfect for hand (Mine is large glove size). but I think an extra large would still fit nicely. Good solid feel, full tang is a must. The Hammer head is nice with the scabbard designed to allow you to keep the blade edge covered while using hammer. Seems to have a nice edge and scabbard is a really good fit, much better than others I have gotten in the past. Just a note, the straps are synthetic/fake leather, so I can't speak to durability in weather, but seem nice enough. I wouldn't have minded if they had used nylon straps, but as it hasn't caused an issue yet I won't ding the design.

Overall, I am very happy with this hatchet I swapped out the hatchet I currently had in my emergency bag with this one.

I really like this survival axe and was impressed with how nice it turned out to be. I have a Gerber Downrange Tomahawk, which is very similar to this, albeit at 3x the price. The Gerber isn't bad, but doesn't really warrant the price, whereas this feels and looks very similar for considerably less. The Gerber isn't made from any kind of fancy steel either - axes generally aren't - they just need to not be brittle so it does present an excellent value.

This axe feels great in the hand; the scales feel solid and are perfectly aligned with the shaft - all of the machining and molding here is excellent. I find the grip to be ergonomic as well, both choked up on the handle and with a wider grip. I may wrap some paracord around the bottom for looks but it's plenty grippy as is. The sheath is really excellent, especially compared to the garbage Gerber ships with the Downrange Tomahawk. It's made from sturdy Kydex with two straps for retention and is high quality with a perfect fit. The attached belt clip isn't half bad either but I may replace it with a higher quality unit from TekLok.

The axe blade is sharp and cuts small branches and pieces of wood well with the pry bar functioning about how you'd expect. That's one area where the Gerber has a better design, having an integrated handle to work the prybar and nail puller, whereas here you need to be mindful of the blade or hold it by the sheath. Overall, I was impressed with the quality and functionality of the axe and would recommend it over the much more expensive Gerber.

This axe is a work of art! I am so impressed with the quality, workmanship, and design of this axe and its sheath. The handle is thick, the tang and blade are sturdy, and edge is razor sharp. Balance of the axe is perfect. I could not wait to throw it, and when I did it was smooth and struck my target firmly.

I love the functionality built into the design of this axe; it is more than just an axe. The axe works as a hammer, pry bar, or scraping tool. This axe is everything I want in a trusty multitool to keep in my camping kit, I am very pleased with it!

In the spirit of preparedness, I got this amazing multifunction axe to be ready for anything. We're coming up on hurricane season, so I'm going to chop down some suspect branches ahead of time. I can also take it with me camping for a multitude of uses. But outside of that, this big hunk can hang out with my bug-out bag, just in case we need to get out of dodge in a hurry. At 12.8' and 1.8 pounds, it won't be the smallest or lightest tool in my bag, because this guy is a beast! Solid, heavy, full tang (metal goes all the way through the handle), and powerful! The axe blade is sharp and has two angles. The hammer head is beefy and will have the weight of the axe behind each blow (you can use it with the sheath on for safety). And the nail puller is there for you at the other end and could also double as a pry bar. The handle is comfortable and ergonomic, so you can get a good grip on it and your hand won't slide. Even the axe head kydex sheath, which you can clip onto a belt, is rugged and durable and snaps on tight around both sides of the handle to make sure it stays on. This company obviously cares about quality, because this is a superb piece of craftsmanship. Made with heat-treated steel, it won't rust or corrode and should last me a lifetime. Even the box it came in has a padded bed to protect it. They even included a soft cleaning cloth with it as an added thoughtful touch. Fabulous company and fabulous product!

This is a great size, sharp right out of the box, and the sheath is very sturdy and well made. The hatchet feels very solid so far and the grip feels great in the hand. I haven't really used the nail puller for anything other than grabbing tent stakes to pull out of the ground but I don't see why it won't work with some leverage under the handle. The back side of the head serves great for hammering tent stakes in or anything you'd need a hammer for while out camping / backpacking. Light enough that I plan on taking it with me on my motorcycle camping trips, but heavy duty enough that I'd trust it for anything I need it for. Very impressed so far!

Still have to go out there and use it, but the weight/balance is amazing and the blade s sharp as wilde. The sheath on this one is perfect, one of the reasons I dropped the Gerber (on top of it being too small).

This is quite a nice little hatchet that is geared more towards chopping than splitting (can still do a good job in a pinch, but it simply is too small for splitting those large logs).

It has some carving and demo features that have been incorporated throughout the design and really have been implemented well. I'm happy that there was an included kydex/plastic sheath, as this thing is as sharp as Uncle Buck's hatchet... sharp enough you can shave with it :)

Full-tang through to the pry bar/nail remover, makes for a complete and total package for getting out into nature. I have only used it a handful of times, but I feel it will last on easy-does-it overland/camping excursions. Will likely let my kids use it alot, as well. Great tool!

This HX OUTDOORS Multifunctional Splitting Axe is perfect for camping: Small enough to carry, totally solid (full tang), nicely balanced. It has a really nice heft and feels like it will be up to any job. The blade is very sharp, right out of the box. This hatched feels like a real tool, not like a toy!
The Kydex sheath is well done, adjustable for different belt width and hold the axe securely.
I totally love this axe for camp chores from pounding in stakes to splitting firewood
